Horizon Business Awards Criteria  
(Event to be held on November 8, 2008 at Dwight Hall) 

Here are the awards that will be presented and the criteria for you to consider when nominating a business or business person for any of the awards. Businesses or persons may be nominated for more than one category.

Entrepreneur of the Year

A person who has organized and assumed the risk of a business locally which has been open for at least 12 months. An Entrepreneur is defined as a person who has the skills and initiative to establish a business venture.

Employer of the Year

A business owner or manager who creates a positive, fair and supportive environment for all employees, while maintaining and even exceeding employment standards and safety policies. This employer models integrity and excellent communication skills. (Nominations must be accompanied by your comments as to why this employer deserves this award)

Family Friendly Business

Awarded to a business who demonstrates leadership in terms of embracing children and families through staff programs, their facilities, their business atmosphere, or their commitment to the community.

Business of the Year

A business that has been in operation for more than 5 years and has consistently offered outstanding service and/or product to its customers and displays a strong commitment to community involvement. (All nominations for this award must be accompanied by a brief explanation as to why you feel this business should be given this award)

Manufacturer of the Year

A business that has strengthened the economic base of Powell River through manufacturing a value added quality product. Their product must be locally manufactured, it must have created jobs and provide promotion of Powell River.

Small Business of the Year

A business with less than 10 employees that has demonstrated superior quality in all aspects of business operation.

Home-Based Business of the Year

A home-operated business that consistently shows excellence and quality in service and/or merchandise.

Large Business of the Year

A business with over 10 employees that has demonstrated superior quality in all aspects of business operation.

Customer Service of the Year - Retail

A retail business that provides its customers with a consistent excellence in service that goes beyond customer expectations. It also encourages it’s staff to meet the changing customer needs and stands behind its product or service with minimum customer inconvenience.

Customer Service of the Year - Hospitality (Accomadations, Restaurants & Coffee houses)

A hospitality business that has consistently provided its customers with excellence in service that goes beyond customer expectations. It also encourages it’s staff to meet the changing customer needs and stands behind its product or service with minimum customer inconvenience.

New Business of the Year

A business operating for more than 1 year and less than 2 years that has gained an expanding positive reputation.

Tourism Excellence Award

A business, organization or person(s) that promotes and encourages visitors to come to Powell River and Area as a destination point.
